350 Maine - in alliance with Environment Maine and NRCM - is supporting a Kalamazoo Anniversary Rally at the Portland Water District from 6-7:30 pm on Thursday, July 25th.

In 2010, a tar sands pipeline ruptured in Michigan and spilled more than 1 million gallons of tar sands oil into the Kalamazoo River.

Next Thursday is the third anniversary of that spill. But the devastation hasn't gone away: people were forced to leave their homes and abandon their livelihoods; wildlife was killed and habitat destroyed; and the EPA has determined that a 30-mile stretch of the Kalamazoo River is now permanently polluted.

This kind of tragedy shouldn't happen anywhere. And it definitely shouldn't happen in Maine.

That's why next Thursday, hundreds of Mainers are holding a rally in Portland to commemorate the Kalamazoo spill and oppose ExxonMobil's plan to pump tar sands through our state.

Will you join us, and hundreds of others, to say no to tar sands?

ExxonMobil wants to use a 63-year-old oil pipeline that crosses a cove of Sebago Lake and the entire watershed to transport highly toxic tar sands oil from Canada to Casco Bay for export. Everything about this plan is a terrible idea: Pipelines carrying tar sands spill three times more oil, and the heavy oil is virtually impossible to clean up.

Sebago Lake is a Maine treasure, and it provides drinking water for 200,000 Mainers. If the Sebago watershed were to suffer a tar sands spill like the one in Kalamazoo, the devastation would be unthinkable. But unless we take a stand, this kind of disaster will become a real possibility.

We can't let that happen. It's up to us to stop ExxonMobil and say no to tar sands.

Join us next Thursday to take a stand against tar sands!

Here are the details of the rally:

When: Thursday, July 25, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Where: Outside the Portland Water District headquarters (at the corner of Douglass Circle and St. James Street, next to the Kiwanis Pool)

What: A rally against tar sands! Come dressed in all black to help simulate an oil spill. And bring signs, banners, and of course friends!

Together, we can stop ExxonMobil's tar sands pipeline and make sure the tragic spill in Kalamazoo isn't repeated.

See you at the rally!
