Divest Maine's Pensions

The fossil fuel divestment movement is growing.  Pension and endowment funds worldwide are questioning a business plan that promotes climate change.   Slowly but surely they are turning their sights, and their financial assets, toward a clean energy future, a future not only better for the planet, but for their investment returns as well!

In the spring of 2013, divestment organizers in Maine submitted a bill to the state legislature calling on the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MPERS) to divest the fossil fuel stocks from their $10 billion fund.  LD1461 was introduced by Rep. Brian Jones of Freedom and assigned to the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee for a hearing.  That hearing will take place sometime in early 2014.

2014 is fast approaching and the MPERS campaign is re-igniting!  Organizers met in Freedom on November 16 to strategize for the upcoming legislative session.  We need YOUR help.

What you can do:

Sign the on-line petition for the MPERS campaign.

If you are a member of one of the unions representing state workers, arrange for a divestment organizer to come speak to your union.

If you are a constituent of one of the members of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, call or write your legislator to urge them to support LD 1461.

Write a letter to the editor of your local paper - ask us for talking points!

Email one of the organizers below to add your name to our list of people planning to testify at the hearing.
